Air Conditioning Basics

You probably already know this, but your AC doesn’t actually create cold air.

Instead, it removes the heat from your Grapevine home.

Air conditioners use a chemical called refrigerant to remove heat and transfer it outdoors. The warm air runs through the lines and coils in your unit, converting from liquid to gas and back again.

During this process, the refrigerant removes the heat and transfers it elsewhere so that when the air comes out the other side, it is cool. Your AC repeats this process until your home reaches the target temperature set on your thermostat.

The four main components of your air conditioner are:

  • Condenser: The condenser is the outside metal unit. It releases the heat outdoors in a safe manner.
  • Compressor: The compressor is inside the condenser. It circulates the pressurized refrigerant, to concentrate the heat, and changes the gas from low pressure to high pressure.
  • Evaporator Coil: The evaporator coil extracts heat from your home.
  • Expansion Valve: The expansion valve controls the amount of refrigerant in your system.

Why is my air conditioner freezing up?

Inadequate airflow is one of the more common reasons why you might find ice buildup on your AC equipment. Check the air filter, evaporator coil, and air ducts to ensure they are clean and unobstructed—and then try to run your system. Give us a call if the problem persists.

Why is my air conditioner blowing warm air?

Several possibilities include a dirty air filter, faulty thermostat, low refrigerant, condenser problems, or even leaky air ducts. After checking your air filter and thermostat settings, give us a call if you still have no cold air.

Air Conditioning Installation and Replacement

Nobody ever wants to replace their HVAC equipment unless absolutely necessary. We always want to get the most value from our investment.

That does not mean waiting until your system breaks down, however.

Your system might turn on and off, but only a professional with the right tools can determine how efficiently your equipment operates. A short-cycling system, for example, will cost you more in utilities and cause your parts to wear down quickly.

Here are a few signs it is time to replace your AC:

  • Your system is over 15 years old and no longer protected by a warranty.
  • Your system cycles frequently
  • You have high energy bills
  • Your system breaks down frequently
  • You have uneven cooling throughout your home

What is a good SEER rating?

The term SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. It measures how much energy your air conditioning system uses to operate. The higher the SEER number, the more efficiently your air conditioner will run. An ENERGY STAR® qualified AC must have a 14 SEER rating or better.

How Much Money Can You Save With a New Air Conditioner?

Our SEER2 (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio 2) energy savings calculator can help determine how much you could save on your utility bills. Simply enter your current unit’s SEER value and compare it to a newer, more efficient SEER2 unit. You can even customize it to better match your home’s system for a more accurate calculation.
